IELTS Reading practice: find the evidence behind your answer

GetYour9 Reading practice puts passages beside question sets so you can work through a part or a complete available test, submit answers, and return to your results. Use review to locate the evidence you missed, then save useful words for later practice.

What you can do in Reading practice

Choose Reading in the practice catalog, open an available test or part, and answer beside the passage. You can return to saved work and review submitted parts. The catalog in your account shows the material currently available.

Clickable words in the passage support dictionary lookup. Save useful words for My Words rather than stopping to memorise every unfamiliar term.

  • Work on a question set before checking its answers.
  • Review your submitted answers and the answer key.
  • Track recurring mistakes across attempts.
  • Move useful vocabulary into a separate review session.

A keyword match is only the start

A passage may use the same word as a question while making a different claim. Compare the meaning, the time period, and words such as all, some, only, and may. The original exercise below tests that habit.

Passage: “The museum extended its opening hours on Fridays. Its weekday entry fee stayed the same.” Statement: “The museum increased its weekday entry fee when it changed its opening hours.” Does the statement agree with the passage?

Show explanation

No. The passage explicitly says the weekday entry fee stayed the same. The mention of changed opening hours does not support a changed price. The decisive evidence is “stayed the same”, not the shared word “museum”.

Turn one wrong answer into a repeatable method

Before looking at the answer key, record which sentence you relied on. After checking, classify the error: wrong evidence, misread instruction, misunderstood vocabulary, or inaccurate answer entry.

For a wrong-evidence error, underline the phrase that proves or contradicts the answer. Then try a new question and explain your choice before submitting. Repeating a corrected answer is less useful than applying the method to an unfamiliar passage.

  • Read the task instructions and any word limit.
  • Locate a candidate passage section.
  • Check the claim, not just matching vocabulary.
  • Review unanswered questions as well as incorrect ones.

Keep practice results in context

An answer key helps you assess that particular practice set. Any displayed band estimate is a preparation signal, not an official IELTS result. Short parts, repeat attempts, and untimed practice are not directly comparable to a complete exam.

Common questions

Do I need an account to practise?

This guide is public. The practice workspace requires an account, and practice allowances depend on your plan. Check the Pricing page and the allowance shown in your account before starting.

Can I practise just one part?

The practice catalog supports opening available parts as well as complete tests. The options depend on the test you select.

Should I look up every unfamiliar word?

First try to understand enough to answer the question. After the attempt, save words that were important to the meaning or that you expect to use again.
