English typing practice for a smoother writing flow
GetYour9’s English typing tool is free inside your account. Choose timed, word-count, or quote practice, see words per minute and accuracy, and compare recent results saved on this browser and device. It supports keyboard fluency; it does not assess an IELTS band.

Choose the typing session that fits your goal
Timed practice offers 15, 30, 60, and 120 seconds. Word practice offers 25, 50, and 100 words. Quote practice uses short, medium, or long original passages with punctuation.
Common English and an IELTS vocabulary collection let you vary the text. The timer starts with your first input. Errors are highlighted, backspace lets you correct them, and Restart or Escape begins a fresh prompt.
- Use a short timed session to establish a consistent baseline.
- Use quote practice to work on punctuation and continuous text.
- Keep the same mode and settings when comparing speed.
- Prioritise accurate input before increasing pace.
Understand WPM and accuracy
GetYour9 calculates WPM from correct characters divided by five and divided by elapsed minutes. Raw WPM counts attempted characters, including corrected keystrokes. Accuracy compares correct input attempts with all attempts; spaces count.
Correcting a mistake improves the current text but does not erase the original mistaken keystroke from accuracy. That makes accuracy useful for checking how consistently you typed.
If you type 150 correct characters in 30 seconds, what is the WPM before display rounding?
Show explanation
60 WPM: 150 ÷ 5 gives 30 standard words, and 30 seconds is half a minute. 30 ÷ 0.5 = 60. This measures typing performance, not essay quality or IELTS scoring.
Compare results on this browser and device
The tool stores the most recent ten results per account on the current browser and device and displays the most recent five. Best WPM compares runs with the same configuration.
Typing results are not synced to the backend. Clearing browser storage or moving to a different device can remove or separate that history. You can still practise if browser storage is unavailable.
Pair typing with a real Writing task
After a short typing warm-up, draft a paragraph in your own words. Keyboard speed can make input feel smoother, but an effective answer still needs relevant ideas, organisation, accurate vocabulary, and grammar.
Do not use a WPM target as an IELTS band target. The typing tool does not change your band estimates or subscription access.
Common questions
Is English typing practice free?
Yes. The GetYour9 typing tool is free inside the authenticated platform. Create an account or sign in to open it; the public explanation is available without signup.
Do typing results sync across devices?
No. Recent typing results are saved per account on the current browser and device. They are not uploaded as a cross-device practice history.
Is this an IELTS typing speed requirement?
No. GetYour9 does not present a minimum WPM as an official IELTS requirement. The tool is a keyboard practice aid, and WPM is not an IELTS band score.
