IELTS overall band score calculator
Enter four section bands to calculate the overall band: add Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking, divide by four, then round to the nearest half band. This calculator combines scores you provide; it does not mark answers or predict performance.

Calculate your overall band
Select section bands, not raw marks out of 40. The values below are an example.
Overall band
(7.5 + 7.0 + 6.0 + 6.5) ÷ 4 = 6.75. Rounded to the nearest half band.
How overall band rounding works
The calculation averages the four section scores. An average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band; an average ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band. The official scoring reference below explains the rule.
For example, Listening 7.5, Reading 7.0, Writing 6.0, and Speaking 6.5 total 27.0. Dividing by four gives 6.75, which rounds to an overall 7.0. Writing is still 6.0: the overall result does not change an individual section score.
An overall result does not replace section requirements
If your goal includes both an overall band and minimum bands in individual skills, inspect all five numbers. A stronger Listening result can raise the average while a Writing score still falls short of your required minimum.
Enter your own target scores to explore a study plan. For example, change one lower section by half a band and see whether the rounded overall result changes. The calculation can help you choose a focus; it cannot say how long improvement will take.
Section bands and raw marks are different inputs
This tool accepts band scores from 0 to 9 in half-band steps. It does not convert a Reading or Listening mark out of 40. Raw-mark conversion depends on the section, test type, and test version; a single universal conversion table can be misleading.
Writing and Speaking also require assessment of a complete performance. You cannot convert an essay word count, a grammar-error count, or a speaking speed into a reliable section band with this calculator.
Common questions
Does 6.25 become an overall 6.5?
Yes. Under the official overall-band rounding rule, an average of 6.25 rounds to 6.5.
Can I calculate an official score from AI estimates?
You can average estimated section bands, but the result remains an estimate. The calculation does not make the inputs official or more accurate.
Does this calculator require an account?
No. The calculator works on this public page. A worked example and the calculation method are also readable without JavaScript.
